The setup
The sleep aid market is dominated by two playbooks: melatonin-anxiety messaging ("you can't sleep, take this pill") or wellness-aspirational messaging ("become someone who sleeps 9 hours"). Both are exhausted on Meta. Frequency caps hit fast. CPMs are punishing.
SoraSleep is a hardware-plus-supplement bundle: a weighted sleep mask paired with magnesium glycinate. The product is genuinely unusual in the category. Most competitors are just a supplement or just a mask. The bundle is the differentiator.
The hypothesis
Stat-led curiosity hooks ("64% of adults can't fall asleep within 20 minutes — here's why") will outperform the standard product-demo hook. Reason: the buyer needs to be told their problem is mechanically solvable, not that they need to "try harder" or "build a routine."
What we shipped
- Six angle buckets: stat-led, ASMR demo, doctor commentary, side-by-side vs. melatonin, sleep-clinic authority, "throw out your stack"
- 30 finished variants across Meta + TikTok-native + YouTube Shorts
- Generation stack: Veo for product realism (the mask material had to look right), Higgsfield-class for sleep-clinic environment shots, Suno for custom music beds with rolling bass that pairs to the ASMR variants
- Audio production: binaural-style stereo mixing for the ASMR variants — significantly improved completion rate on TikTok
What worked
Stat-led + ASMR cleaned up at scale:
- "64% can't fall asleep within 20 minutes." — Stat hook + cinematic clock close-up + payoff. CPA $25, 5.1% CTR.
- "Throw out your melatonin." — Pattern-interrupt hook, contrast against existing stack. CPA $29, 4.4% CTR.
- "It's not insomnia. It's cortisol." — Reframe hook, doctor-narrated. CPA $32, 3.9% CTR.
- ASMR demo variant — pure product use, binaural audio, no voiceover. CPA $36 but extraordinary watch time (averaged 8.2s on TikTok). Used as the upper-funnel widener.
What didn't work
- Sleep-clinic authority cut — looked too pharmaceutical, triggered Meta health-claim review twice. Killed.
- Wellness-aspirational ("be the person who sleeps 9 hours") — generic, indistinguishable from competitors. CPA $68.
- YouTube Shorts — burned 12% of test budget for 2% of conversions. Pulled spend back to Meta + TikTok by Day 9.
The lesson
For categories where the buyer is fatigued by category-standard messaging, the hook needs to contradict the category default — not extend it. "Throw out your melatonin" works because the buyer's been told to take melatonin for ten years. The reframe is the value.
What we'd do differently
- Lead Day 1 with the binaural ASMR variant — completion rate signaled it would build the strongest TikTok account warming
- Cut sleep-clinic angle entirely, reallocate to a "doctor commentary" treatment with looser visual styling that won't trigger health review
- Test a partner-narrated hook ("my husband sleeps now" / "my wife sleeps now") — comments suggested significant resonance
